VanNessa Duckett and Math Intervention Teacher Ms. Randolph talked for hours about what Let's Play Math could look like afterschool? They discussed what would grab and keep children's attention afterschool, what would make daytime learning visible, tangible, and sticky? What would best align with DCPS standards and that assessment data showed were most in need of support? From there, Ms. Randolph went off and created her magical class, Let's Play Math where students build, discuss, collaborate, repeat. A space where there are daily whoopsies and they are launch-points for new learning; normalizing what some students feel are failures when things don't work or an explanation needs retooling and rebranding it as opportunities growth because they are authentically are. The joy is, all of this is done with toys, math manipulatives, and high-leverage tasks in hand. Ms. Randolph has found ways to light up math classes from preschool through "The Big Kids" groups and Polite Piggy's team has such respect for the value she adds.
