Can you describe your teaching process?
I've been working with Polite Piggy's for about a year and a half now; starting virtually and now in-person. Within my classes, I offer social art projects that call for playfulness, exploratory freedom of creativity, while also learning about artists who have shaped the world, past and present.
Where else do you practice your craft?
Outside of Polite Piggies, I work for EYL 365 (Enjoy Your Life 365), who partners with After School All Stars and community organizations seeking art programming that helps children expand and learn through the arts.
What do you like to do?
I am a fan of the arts: illustrating, painting, sewing, films, theater, sustainable fashion! I love to go thrifting, or taking walks through museums (to gather inspiration for future projects) or simply for perspective. Outside of the arts, I have found new appreciation for nature: lounging by water for peace of mind, and stillness for yoga, journaling and reading.
How do you practice self-care?
Self-Care is actually what led me to my latest business endeavor, Detox Art. Moving back to VA in March of 2020, and feeling the lows of life and uncertainty, I unknowingly created a unique spirit-guided creative flow. This gentle workflow has offered me the ability to create with grace and ease, using my emotions and body to produce magical pieces. My private practice involves many aspects and has helped me to relax, release and reflect, while using them as inspiration and energy to "become art." Today, I offer creative space online to serve Teachers, Parents and others who may feel stressed or looking for alternative self-care practices.
Teaching has given me perspective about what it means and may look like to be an "Artist." Personally, I've been selling works since 2017, but teaching has been a rewarding pivot. I never thought I would ever teach a class, but I'm glad I said "yes" and took a chance. Because of Polite Piggies and EYL 365, I've found clarity in my artistic offerings, and look forward to Detox Art's creative process of others, and growth as a business. I'm thankful that teaching has opened doors, and cleared confusion about where I can go to fulfill the goals within my heart.
What is your favorite part of working at PP?
My favorite part about working with Polite Piggies is being able to meet young, unique minds who see art as a tool for self exploration and discussion as it pertains to mindset and breaking limitations.
